I had the honour of speaking at the BrandQuest Forum 10-11 Dec 2024 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, a vibrant event organized by the Malaysian Ministry of Entrepreneurship and Cooperative Development and supported by SME Corp. Malaysia and the Malaysia Design Development Centre (DDEC). This gathering brought together entrepreneurs, business leaders, and innovators to discuss how Malaysian SMEs can expand their footprint regionally and globally.

I focused on strategies for branding, leveraging digital platforms, and the transformative power of purpose—the reason businesses exist beyond profits.
Here’s a recap of the key takeaways from his talk and the engaging discussions that followed.
The Case for Regional Expansion with Purpose
Southeast Asia offers immense opportunities for Malaysian SMEs, with diverse markets, increasing digital adoption, and growing consumer awareness of sustainability and ethical practices. Beyond the tactical advantages of regional expansion, Jon emphasized the importance of embedding purpose-driven business strategies.
Purpose is the why of your business—it’s about the positive impact you aim to create and aligning your values with your stakeholders.
For example:
• Singapore: Consumers seek brands that embody transparency and sustainable practices.
• Indonesia: Purpose helps brands stand out in a competitive, price-sensitive market.
• Thailand: Lifestyle-driven consumers resonate with brands that champion meaningful causes, such as environmental sustainability or community development.
The key message? Purposeful businesses build lasting trust and loyalty across markets.
Branding Across Borders with Purpose at the Core
A strong brand identity rooted in purpose is the foundation of success in competitive markets. Authenticity isn’t just a nice-to-have; it’s a strategic imperative.
During the session, I shared examples of Malaysian SMEs successfully blending purpose with regional aspirations. One standout case involved a company that, despite offering a non-green product, aligned its supply chain with sustainable practices and transparently communicated these efforts.
For SMEs, defining their why - the reason they exist beyond profit—isn’t just about ethics; it’s a strategy to resonate with consumers, differentiate from competitors, and expand authentically.
Purpose and Digital Platforms: A Winning Combination
Digital platforms are powerful tools for SMEs to connect with purpose-driven consumers. Whether it’s through engaging TikTok content or a seamless Shopify storefront, the integration of purpose into digital strategies can significantly boost success.
For example:
• TikTok Shop: Perfect for storytelling that connects emotionally with younger audiences.
• Shopee and Lazada: Purpose-driven campaigns, such as eco-friendly products or charity tie-ins, stand out during promotions.
• Shopify: Ideal for creating a branded experience that centers on your purpose while maintaining full control over messaging.
Today’s consumers don’t just buy products; they buy into brands that share their values. SMEs that communicate their purpose effectively on digital platforms can build both meaningful engagement and sustainable growth.
Post-Forum Collaborations and Purpose in Action
The forum wasn’t just about sharing ideas; it was about sparking action. Attendees showed immense curiosity about balancing profitability with purpose, signaling a growing appetite for sustainable, socially conscious strategies.
Following my talk, Cognitive Blend engaged with several SMEs seeking support to integrate purpose into their branding and marketing strategies. One such opportunity is with a Malaysian-grown sports retailer and an FMCG, where we’re developing a plan that reflects their retail ambitions while embedding a purpose-driven narrative. Additionally, strategic sessions such as our proprietory PurposeFlow trademarked process is deployed to equip SME owners with practical tools for aligning their businesses with purpose-driven growth.

Why Purpose is Non-Negotiable
At Cognitive Blend, we firmly believe that purpose isn’t just a feel-good addition - it’s a cornerstone of sustainable growth, customer loyalty, and long-term brand equity.
Purpose answers the fundamental why of your business. Why do you exist beyond profits? What impact do you want to create for your customers, employees, and the world? Companies that clearly define and communicate their purpose will capture not only the attention of today’s consumers but also their hearts and loyalty.
